UNION GROVE — A 17-year-old Delavan man is in custody, accused of stabbing a roommate while he and others were travelling in a car from Racine to Delavan on Saturday.
Rigoberto Nova Morales, of the 500 block of Elmhurst Avenue in Delavan, was charged Monday in Racine County Circuit Court with a felony count of substantial battery and a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct with the use of a dangerous weapon. Both charges have potential penalty enhancers due to the incident being deemed a domestic-abuse case.
According to the criminal complaint:
A man was driving in a car in the Village of Union Grove with his sister and Nova Morales in the vehicle. Nova Morales is reportedly the boyfriend of the victim’s sister. All three share a residence, the complaint states.
The driver told authorities he had been taunting Nova Morales with vulgarities. Nova Morales was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle and told authorities he became angry about the taunts and stabbed the driver in the upper right shoulder area.
The victim was treated at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center-Walworth, near Lake Geneva, where he received six stitches to close the wound.
Nova Morales remained in the Racine County Jail as of Monday night, online records showed. He is assigned a preliminary hearing for March 7 at the county Law Enforcement Center.
