STURTEVANT — Two people are reportedly injured, one apparently seriously, as a result of a collision at Washington Avenue (Highway 20) and 90th Street early Wednesday night.
The collision was reported at about 5:50 p.m. According to radio transmissions, a South Shore Fire Department ambulance transported a woman with a head injury to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa.
Fire officials inquired about the possibility of having Flight for Life respond to Ascension All Saints Hospital in Racine to transport the patient to Froedtert, but they were told that the regional emergency medevac helicopter was grounded because of weather conditions.
Captain Tim O’Neill of the Sturtevant Police Department said his officers were sent to Froedtert to check on the woman’s condition. As of 9 p.m. Wednesday, he had not heard any updates.
The other driver was checked by South Shore emergency personnel but ultimately left the scene on her own.
According to Mount Pleasant police, a Chevrolet Trax crossover-type sedan was traveling west on Highway 20 and was attempting to turn south on to 90th Street when it collided with a GMC Terrain SUV that was traveling east on Highway 20. Police said the woman who was transported to Froedtert was driving the Chevrolet.
Both vehicles sustained heavy damage, fire officials and witnesses reported, with the GMC appearing to be totaled.
Police said the crash occurred on the Sturtevant side of the intersection.
Local police requested that a Wisconsin State Patrol accident investigation team respond to the scene. O’Neill said his department planned on releasing an accident report on Friday.
Related traffic closures were reported on 90th Street, Highway 20 and the Highway 20 frontage road, according to police.
