RACINE — A Racine woman is facing charges after reportedly dropping her 2-year-old daughter off with an acquaintance and not returning for her.
Vania F. Hayes, of the 1100 block of Marquette Street, is charged with misdemeanor counts of child neglect and interfering with child custody.
According to the criminal complaint:
On April 22, 2017, a Racine police officer was dispatched to the 1600 block of South Memorial Drive for child neglect. The complainant said Hayes had dropped her 2-year-old daughter off at about 12:30 a.m. on April 22, put the child to bed and asked her to watch the child for 90 minutes, saying she would return at 2 a.m.
At 2:30 a.m., Hayes had not returned. The complainant tried calling Hayes before going to bed, but Hayes did not answer. The complainant said she woke before 9 a.m. and still had not heard from Hayes.
The complainant called Hayes multiple times throughout the day from four different phone numbers. Hayes did not answer or return her calls.
At 7:17 p.m., the complainant called the police to report the neglect, saying she did not have diapers or milk to care for the child and did not know Hayes’ full name or address. She said Hayes is a known crack cocaine addict and that Hayes’ children had been taken away in the past.
Officers went to Hayes’ home and saw a TV and lights on and Hayes’ vehicle parked, but no one came to the door. Hayes was called multiple times via phone and did not answer.
Police contacted the Racine Human Services Department; a worker said the child had been removed from Hayes’ custody in March 2017 and placed with a family member. The worker said the child was not supposed to be with Hayes and Hayes was aware of the placement. The child was placed in a foster home for the evening.
Hayes did not return a call or make any contact regarding the child’s well being.
During Hayes’ appearance on Monday, Hayes was being held on a $5,000 cash bond, online records show. A status conference is scheduled for June 8 at the Law Enforcement Center, 717 Wisconsin Ave.
