RACINE — A 47-year-old Racine man is accused of sneaking behind the counter at Walmart to steal cigarettes.
According to the criminal complaint:
A Mount Pleasant police officer was dispatched to the Walmart at 3049 Oakes Road where the store’s loss prevention officer said employees had reported an issue with the cigarettes.
The prevention officer watched surveillance videos and saw a man had entered the store, stood by the registers and when employees weren’t looking, crawled on his hands and knees behind the registers and took handfuls of cigarette cartons. The man then concealed the cartons and walked out of the store without paying.
Clyde L. Diedrick, 47, of the 5100 block of Byrd Avenue, has been charged with one count of felony retail theft. Diedrick has several prior convictions, including retail theft in October 2017, battery in December 2011, cocaine possession in February 2010 and robbery with use of force in May 2002.
The loss prevention officer said they’d found two thefts recorded — one on Dec 2 at 1:25 a.m. and another on Dec. 5 at 2:46 a.m. The suspect allegedly took nine cartons of cigarettes which totaled $636.30 in value.
In the Dec. 5 video another man walked into the store in close proximity to the first and the two met in the bathroom. The second man did not take any items but the loss prevention officer suspected he was a decoy to keep the employees busy and distracted.
