MOUNT PLEASANT — A Milwaukee man is facing charges after he was reportedly found staying in an under-construction hotel room without the hotel staff's knowledge.
Misdemeanor charges of fraud of a hotel, restaurant or taxicab were filed Monday against Steffen D. Metts, 31, of the 4500 block of West Burleigh Street.
According to the criminal complaint:
On Friday, Mount Pleasant police responded to the America's Best Value Inn, 5419 Durand Ave., after a hotel employee said they believed someone might be staying in a room in a section of a hotel that is currently under construction. The employee said when they tried to enter the room, they discovered it had been latched from the inside.
Officers used a tool to enter the room and they reportedly discovered Metts lying on a bed. They also reportedly found groceries and two coffee pots that had disappeared from the hotel lobby in the room.
If convicted, Metts could face a fine of up to $10,000 and/or nine months in prison. An initial appearance is scheduled for Metts on Tuesday, Dec. 5, at the Racine County Law Enforcement Center, 717 Wisconsin Ave.
He remained in custody as of Monday night, online records indicated.
