RACINE — A Chicago man was taken into custody Monday for his alleged involvement in a 2014 jewelry theft at Regency Mall.

Catrell Weekly, 50, of the 5400 block of South Michigan Avenue, is charged as a party to the crime of felony theft of more than $10,000 worth of movable property.

Two Chicago residents also were charged in 2015 as parties to the crime of theft in connection to the incident, but charges against both were dismissed, online records show.

According to the criminal complaint:

On Jan. 25, 2014, two suspects allegedly entered Shaw’s Jewelers inside Regency Mall, 5760 Durand Ave. The two were looking at wedding bands and later, a third person, later identified as Winston, reportedly joined them. Employees thought it was odd, as all three suspects were reportedly huddled at the counter looking at rings.

The next morning, store employees discovered two wedding band sets were missing, resulting in a loss of approximately $17,000.

Surveillance footage reportedly showed Weekly reaching into an open case and grabbing rings while an employee attended to the “couple.” He then alleged put the rings in his back pocket.

Racine police later received a call from a detective in Gurnee, Ill., who said three suspects were allegedly traveling cross country stealing jewelry. The trio had stolen an estimated $1 million worth of jewelry overall.

A $20,000 arrest warrant was issued in 2015 for Weekly, who was in custody in Illinois at that time.

Weekly is currently being held at the Racine County Jail on a $1,000 cash bond, online records show. A preliminary hearing is scheduled on Feb. 13 at the Law Enforcement Center, 717 Wisconsin Ave.
