RACINE - The sign on top of the doorway of Serriah's Beauty Salon, 3500 Kinzie Ave., shows a curvaceous woman in a skin-tight dress.
Store owner Luerene Locke put the sign up without city staff approval as required, according to Director of City Development Brian O'Connell. They asked her to submit her proposal, which was then rejected in July.
Upon reviewing the sign, city staff asked Locke to reduce the size of the image of "the dancing girl," or just go with the words, but she decided to appeal.
The matter was scheduled to go before the City Plan Commission Wednesday night, but Locke was unable to come. The matter was deferred to Aug. 26.
On Wednesday, the city staff's recommendation was to uphold the initial rejection.
"I'm not sure the sign is entirely appropriate for a residential area," said Alderman Greg Helding, a commission member. "Especially when you consider it's right across from a grade school."
