RACINE — A city committee unanimously voted Tuesday night against accepting free land.

Vulcan Lands, Inc., a company that owns a quarry on 3 Mile Road, wanted to donate 3.59 acres to the city along the road, by Cheska Park. But the Public Works and Services Committee voted against it.

Alderman Greg Helding, committee chairman, said that a road by the land is up for paving in the near future and if the city does not own the land, it will be able to assess some of the costs to the business that owns the land by the road.

He also said the city has a lot of land it already has to maintain, and this would be another property it has to mow and take care of.

“The city never gets free land,” Helding said. “There is always a catch.”

The rejection will go to the City Council Tuesday for a vote. That meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at City Hall, 730 Washington Ave., Room 205.
