RACINE - A woman who crashed her car, injuring herself and her children, while she was high on cocaine has pled guilty to the charges against her.
Angela J. Girard of Caledonia pleaded guilty on Friday in Racine County Circuit Court to injury by use of a vehicle with a controlled substance and possession of cocaine. She faces up to 13 years in prison.
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Dec. 14.
According to the criminal complaint, on Aug. 16, 2007, Girard was driving with her two children when she drove into a semitrailer outside the Klema Feeds store, just north of the intersection of highways H and K in Franksville.
Girard and her daughter, then 2, were treated at Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints hospital, 3801 Spring St., and later released. Her son, then 4, was taken by Flight For Life to Children's Hospital in Wauwatosa.
Police said the boy was unrestrained in the front seat of the car at the time of the crash.
Police found Girard's purse at the scene; inside it they found a piece of folded paper containing cocaine. Police drew blood for a drug test, which showed she had cocaine and oxycodone pain medication in her system at the time.
