RACINE COUNTY - We Energies crews worked through the day to restore power to about 2,000 Racine County customers left without electricity after Sunday's storms.

Most of the customers were in Caledonia and Raymond, said Brian Manthey, spokesman for We Energies.

"There's no question about it, Racine County is the one that got hit," Manthey said Monday morning. "There's damage still with broken poles and downed wires."

Those whose electricity had not been restored by Monday morning were most likely those closest to significant damage, Manthey said, like downed poles or damaged equipment.

"In this stage it goes slower," he said. "When you have to replace an entire utility pole or the cross-arm, all the equipment up on top of one of those poles, it's a more significant repair to get finished."

Manthey said crews will work through the day to restore power, but said there scould still be scattered outages.

In Racine, one of the customers still without power on Monday was Taylor Hall, the administration building and lodging area at the DeKoven Center, 600 21st St.

A large tree was struck by lightning, and when part of it fell, it took out power to the building.

Some of the center's 14 guests - members of a Norwegian family in town for a family reunion - were on the front step when the lightning struck, said Max Dershem, executive director of the DeKoven Center.

"They saw the lightning hit the tree and it brought the main limb down," Dershem said Monday afternoon.

When the tree fell, it took out the power and phone lines. The surge of power from the lightning strike fried the electrical meter, which was in several pieces on the ground.

There was a large scorch mark on the trunk of the tree, and the fallen portion bisected the Bishop's Garden, a shady nook between Taylor Hall and the pool building. The fallen tree lay between two statues.

"St. Francis and the Blessed Virgin are still here," Dershem said.

He hoped the building would be back to full power by Monday evening.

There were less than 100 customers still without power as of Monday night, according to Manthey. He said the outages were mostly in Racine County, with a handful in Milwaukee and Kenosha counties.
