No Sturtevant businesses sold tobacco to minors during compliance checks in June and July, marking the third year of full compliance by establishments in the village.

This summer, compliance checks were made at businesses in Sturtevant, Mount Pleasant, Caledonia and in communities west of the Interstate. A total of 106 businesses were visited during the checks, and 16 sold to minors.

Of the 43 businesses checked in Mount Pleasant, Caledonia and Sturtevant, five sold to minors, for a compliance rate of 88 percent. Last year, there was a compliance rate of 90 percent.

West of the Interstate, 11 of the 63 checked businesses sold to minors, for an 83 percent compliance rate. Last year's rate was 79 percent.

The checks began in 2002, as part of the WI Wins program. Trained teams of teens and law enforcement officers visit businesses that sell tobacco products. The teens attempt to purchase tobacco. When retailers do not sell to minors, they receive a notice of appreciation. When they do not follow the law, they may be issued a warning or citation, and may be given educational resources to avoid future violations and citations.

A second round of checks may take place later this year.
