YORKVILLE — While area residents await news about whether Taiwanese giant Foxconn will come to Racine County, another Taiwan-based company has announced it is moving manufacturing operations to Yorkville, just west of Interstate 94.

The Racine County Economic Development Corporation on Wednesday announced that Johnson Health Tech North America plans to relocate its South Milwaukee manufacturing operations to Yorkville and has signed a lease for a 200,000-square-foot facility in the Grandview Business Park at 1333 Grandview Parkway.

Johnson Health Tech North America is a manufacturer of award-winning fitness equipment. Its global management headquarters are based in Taichung, Taiwan, with global product development, marketing and engineering based in Cottage Grove, Wis.

While the move comes at a time when a lot of focus is on Foxconn, it’s not at all connected to Foxconn, said Jordan Brown, business recruitment specialist for the RCEDC. He said talks about moving Johnson Health Tech stared last fall and the company needed to move because it was time for a new facility.

Johnson Health Tech considered several options before deciding to relocate its South Milwaukee operations to Racine County.

This new location will be home to the company’s manufacturing and production of a variety of fitness equipment under several brands.

“Johnson Health Tech is committed to investing in Racine County and creating new opportunities for growth,” said Howard Launstein, plant controller of Johnson Health Tech North America.

Staffing forecast

When fully staffed, the project is expected to employ 75 people at the Racine County manufacturing location, and possibly more in the future. Launstein said some of the employees will move over from South Milwaukee, but they are already working with the Racine County Workforce Development Center to fill open positions, everything from stock room employees and assemblers to welders and CNC operators. The starting pay is about $12 to $14 and can go up depending on the position.

“Johnson Health Tech North America is a great example of a growing company that has found increased value in Racine County,” Racine County Executive Jonathan Delagrave said in a release announcing the move. “We are pleased that Johnson Health Tech chose to invest here, taking advantage of Racine County’s prime location in the heart of the Chicago-Milwaukee corridor.”

Yorkville Town Chairman Peter Hansen also welcomed the new business in a release, saying, “Johnson Health Tech North America is a fantastic business and we are pleased they have chosen our community as the center of their manufacturing operations.”
