Synopsis of book (plot): What makes us a good or bad boss are the behaviors we call a person’s character. The better our character, the better manager we will be. We can improve our character, and thereby improve our organization’s effectiveness and productivity as well as our job satisfaction. Now is the time to start.

Is this your first book? No. I wrote another book six years ago titled “Knowing and Loving: The Keys to Real Happiness.”

Why did you write the book? I was teaching a “Principles of Management” course at a university in the Chicago area a few years ago and came across a quote in a textbook which I had never seen before — “In making decisions…the moral character of the decision-maker…determines the quality of decisions.” In close to 50 years of managing people in business, government and the not-for-profit sectors, as well as teaching and facilitating many management and supervisory training programs, I had never heard anyone talk about the connection between moral character and making quality decisions. The idea intrigued me. I did some research and did not find any book which linked moral character and management. I wanted to share some ideas about character and quality decisions which I have learned from many excellent managers I have worked with over the years.

How long did it take you to write the book? About one year while doing a number of other things as a volunteer in the community and some part-time management consulting work.

How did you get interested in writing? I like writing. It helps me clarify what I am thinking, what I understand about issues I need to deal with professionally and personally, and what options I have when it comes to making decisions. Plus, I have learned a lot from a lot of good people over the years. What I have learned from them has helped me be a better manager. I hope my book helps other managers be the best that they can be.

Where is the book available for purchase? Through Amazon and Barnes & Noble. It is available in paper back and as an ebook for Nook and Kindle.
