KENOSHA — The Kenosha History Center’s November Artifact of the Month is a post mortem photograph of a young child.
Popularized in the Victorian era (1837-1901), post mortem photography is the act of taking pictures of loved ones who have recently died in an attempt to preserve their memory. Alma Merrick of Kenosha donated this month’s artifact in 1968. Bradley Kautenburg, an intern from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, installed the artifact.
The artifact will be on display through Nov. 30. Kenosha History Center hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. There is no admission fee; donations are accepted.
