St. John’s Lutheran Church, 1501 Erie St., will hold its annual Christmas concert at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10.

Pre-concert preludial music beginning at 6:45 p.m. will feature selections performed by guest organist, Frederik M. Bach, and flutist, Kristina Beier. The trumpeters will be Diane Andersen, Leif Lovdahl and Eunice Matter. The crucifer will be Kyle Marweg.

The St. John’s Senior, Children’s and Handbell choirs, under the direction of Arthur Preuss Sr., will join to present several carol arrangements by Preuss as well as F. Melius Christiansen’s arrangement of “Beautiful Savior.” The final number by the Senior Choir will be the majestic “Glory to God” by Johann Sebastian Bach. The Rev. Jack Gilbert will be the officiant and narrator.

Donations will be accepted for the St. John’s music program. A reception will follow the concert in the school cafeteria.


Faith United Methodist and Trinity United Methodist Church will hold a joint worship service at 9:15 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, at Trinity, 3825 Erie St. The guest pastor will be the Rev. Deborah Thompson, Wisconsin Conference Southeast District superintendent. The liturgist will be the Rev. Dr. Don Francis. The service will include Trinity’s Bell Choir presentation of “Hark the Herold Angels Sing,” under the direction of the Rev. Martha Jackson Oppeneer. The Chancel Choir, under the direction of Tony Roland, will also be a part of the service.

The 2017 Joint Charge Conference will be held after the service in Fellowship Hall. Thompson will facilitate the meeting.


Chris Van Beek, a second-year student at Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill., will lead the 8 and 10:15 a.m. services on Sunday, Dec. 10, at Yorkville United Methodist Church, 17645 Old Yorkville Road, Union Grove. “Will You Travel to Bethlehem?” will be sung by the Chancel Choir at the 10:15 a.m. service.


Advent services will be held at these churches Wednesday, Dec. 13:

Christ the King Lutheran Church, 3350 LaSalle St., 6 p.m. The theme is “Do You See What I See? Advent Through the Eyes of Isaiah.”

First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 728 Villa St., 7 p.m. Under the Reformation for Advent theme, “Solas of the Reformation,” the Rev. John Roekle will preach on Sola Fide/Faith Alone. The Senior Men’s Choir will sing.

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 4340 6 Mile Road, Caledonia, 7 p.m.

Grace Lutheran Church, 3700 Washington Ave., 6:30 p.m. “The Word Became Flesh Advent Series” is the focus for the evening on John 1:6-9, 15.


These programs will be held at Siena Retreat Center, 5637 Erie St., Caledonia:

“Advent Taizé Prayer,” 6:30-8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11. Join an evening of prayer, silent reflection, scripture, ritual and simple meditative chants. An offering will be accepted.

“Advent Day of Solitude,” 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17. Take some time to relax and refresh in the middle of this busy time of year. Between the opening and closing gatherings, create your own schedule with opportunities for nature walks, contemplative prayer, spiritual direction and/or creative expression. The $35 fee includes a noon meal.
