RACINE — Sacred Heart Congregation and Racine County Foster Care recently announced the formation of Kids Closet.

It is a free resource for foster families and relative care providers to access clothing and other basic care supplies for foster children who are placed in a new home.

The idea of Kids Closet stemmed from the church’s desire to do more and become a “fostering congregation.” They conducted listening sessions to determine how they would help. Utilizing their congregation and contributions from the community, Sacred Heart Parish collects new and gently used clothing and other items for foster families.

The entire Sacred Heart congregation is involved in some fashion. Some have decided to be trained as respite providers who care for foster children at times when foster parents need to take care of emergency situations or just need time for self-care and renewal. Others are Kids Closet volunteers and the remaining members donate clothing items for the closet.

The program operates through one of the coordinators, who is contacted by foster care staff when a family needs assistance. Kids Closet volunteers gather clothing items for the child and coordinate delivery with the foster parent.
