Now is the season when we give thanks for our good fortune during the past year and throughout our lives.

It’s also a good time to begin considering how we might give back with special year-end activities or gifts. The Stop Child Abuse and Neglect Program of Lutheran Social Services would like you to consider SCAN as a worthy beneficiary of that year-end good will.

SCAN teaches child abuse prevention in all Racine Unified preschool, elementary and middle schools, most Racine private and parochial schools, many schools in western Racine County, and Kenosha Unified elementary schools. Last year, SCAN taught more than 12,000 kids to recognize abuse, report it if it occurs, and identify sources of support. Above all, they learn that abuse is never a child’s fault.

You can help SCAN work to end child abuse by “CAREing.”

Contribute: Please consider SCAN for a special year-end monetary gift or donation. Such a donation brings benefits to the giver in the form of income tax deductions, capital gains savings, and other financial advantages. However, the benefits to SCAN would be equally significant.

Also, if you happen to be a Thrivent Financial client, you have a unique ability to select nonprofits like SCAN as recipients of Thrivent Choice Dollars. You can designate your Choice Dollars by visiting www.thrivent.com, logging into your account, and selecting Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan as the organization you’d like to support. Then be sure to notify SCAN so we can make sure your dollars come to our program within LSS. These dollars expire at the end of the year, so use them or lose them. Contact SCAN at 262-619-1633 with any questions.

Advocate: During the month of November, SCAN is running a social media campaign called GIMME 5 for Safe Kids. We are asking people to donate $5 to SCAN through a link provided and then encourage five friends to do the same.

This helps to fund child abuse prevention lessons in Racine schools and spread the word about SCAN and the necessary work it does in our community. Get more information on “Stop Child Abuse and Neglect-SCAN” Facebook Page

Reach out: Make plans to join SCAN at the Racine Barnes & Noble on Friday, Dec. 1, at 6:30 p.m. There will be story time, treats and crafts for the kids and music from the Union Grove High School Carolers at 7:30 p.m. Also, any store purchases made that night will benefit SCAN as long as you mention SCAN at the checkout. Contact us for more information.

Educate: Please like the “Stop Child Abuse and Neglect-SCAN” Facebook Page. Postings will inform you about child abuse trends in Racine, educate you about ways to protect your children or youth you know, let you know about upcoming SCAN events and inspire you to spread the word about the importance of child abuse prevention.

With your help and generosity, SCAN can continue the empowering work we do educating thousands of students each year about child abuse.
