BUENA PARK, CA—Death, as it must to all men, came to William F. Smithana, 92, October 13, 2017 in Buena Park, California.
He was born in Racine, Wisconsin, November 9, 1924, the son of William J. and Della (Blackburn) Smithana. He graduated from Washington Park High School in Racine. As a highly decorated WW2 veteran, he served with the army infantry in Germany and Austria. He was awarded several medals for valor, including the Campaign and Service Victory Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was also promoted to the rank of Sergeant. A 1950 graduate of the University of Wisconsin’s School of Journalism in Madison, his career included working as a reporter for the Mesa (AZ) Daily Tribune and as a copywriter for an advertising agency in the Wrigley Building in Chicago. In 1952 he married the love of his life, Frances Ricciardi, in Kenosha, WI. In 1962 he joined the J. I. Case Company in Racine. In 1977 he transferred to Buena Park, California as a Case Supervisor of Product Sales for California, Alaska and Hawaii. He took early retirement in 1981. He enjoyed traveling and visited all 50 states. He is survived by his son, William J. Smithana (Margaret) in Racine and his daughter Christine (Robert) Glover in Buena Park, CA; a sister, Lois Young of Racine; a brother Donald (Anne) Smithana of San Diego, CA; a grandson, Patrick Cain of Pasadena; three granddaughters, Carolyn (Stephen) Green of Pasadena, Kelly (David) Langert of Chicago and Kristin Clinkenbeard of Milwaukee; two great granddaughters Lucy Margaret and Daphne Ann Langert of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Frances and his daughter Jean Cain.
