August 29th, 1934—December 5th, 2017
BRIGHTON—Shirley (Schattner) Daniels entered into eternal life on December 5th, 2017 at her home, surrounded by her loving husband of 63 years and their children.
Shirley was born on August 29th, 1934 and lived in Ives Grove, Wisconsin and graduated from Union Grove High School in 1952. Shirl met Carl E. Daniels at a local dance hall and they were married on November 20th, 1954 at Saint Sebastian Church, Sturtevant, WI.
Shirley was a homemaker raising 7 children while helping Carl with the family dairy farm. In 1994, she graduated from Gateway Technical College with a degree in Fashion Merchandising. After graduation, she worked part-time at U.W. 4-H Extension office in Kenosha County. Her accomplishments extended outside the family farm and home through many civic, church and volunteer organizations. She was the first female President of Westosha Central High School Board and an active school board member for 24 years. During her term (1977-2001) she was instrumental in the expansion of the new gymnasium, cafeteria, music and computer rooms. She was a strong advocate for strengthening the education of all students.
She served 53 years as Kenosha County 4-H sewing leader and fair superintendent, 25 years as General Leader for Brighton Explorers 4-H Club, a member of the Home and Community Education (H.C.E.) and Wisconsin State Fairest of the Fair Committee. Shirl was an accomplished seamstress. She judged 4-H sewing projects at the local and county levels for many years. She served on numerous committees with the Kenosha County Fair Association at both local and state levels. She also was an active member in Kenosha County Farm Bureau. As a pillar of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Parish, she served as Trustee and Lay Minister and was an advocate of catholic education.
Shirley enjoyed spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren, sewing, counted cross stitching, Swedish weaving, painting, crafts and gardening. She loved making special Christmas cookies with her children and grandchildren.
Shirl is survived by her husband of 63 years, Carl E. Daniels, their children: Dave (Kim), Brighton, WI; Deb (Jeff) Butler, New Munster, WI; Dawn (Steve) Novak, Rochester, NY; Dona (Larry) Turner, Beaver Dam, WI; Dian (Byron) Biehn, Brighton, WI; Dirk (Sara), Kenosha, WI; Dodi (Mike) David, Milwaukee, WI; her 11 Grandchildren and another on the way, brother, Gerhardt (Helen) Schattner and numerous nieces and nephews, family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her son, Doug A. Daniels, parents, Ervin and Irene Schattner, in-laws, Max & Elizabeth Daniels, brother-in-law, Father Paul A. Daniels, sisters-in-law Bernice (Hershel) Vos and Lou (Nick) Hancock.
Her legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of her family, friends and everyone she interacted with as well as those she reached but never met. Please keep her memory alive by volunteering and being an involved member of your community.
Please share your stories of remembrance on December 8th, 2017 at Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home in Burlington, WI from 3pm – 7pm. An extended wake will begin at 9:30am – 10:30am at St. Francis Xavier Church, Brighton, WI with a Mass of Christian Burial on December 9th, 2017 at 11am.
