Richard Stone

February 17, 1933—September 6, 2017

LAND O’ LAKES, WI—Richard (Dick) Stone, 84, currently of Land O Lakes, Wisconsin and Sun City West, Arizona formerly of Racine, Wisconsin went to heaven on September 6, 2017, likely because God needed some remodeling work done on the pearly gates.

He was born on February 17, 1933 in Racine, Wisconsin, the son of the late Emma and Gilbert Stone. He entered this world 10 minutes behind his twin brother Robert (Bob) Stone, who also entered heaven before him in 2011. The family was also blessed with a younger sister Carol (Stone) Beresford of Franksville, Wisconsin, who survives them both to share stories of the love and brotherly shenanigans she received from her older brothers.

In 1953 he graduated from Racine Horlick High School and served in the U.S. Army after high school. He married the love of his life Yvonne (nee Willers) Stone on March 26, 1964 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Winside, Nebraska. Together they built a home in Racine and a cottage on Crystal Lake outside Land O Lakes, Wisconsin; where they raised two daughters, Barb and Effie.

They enjoyed a life of golfing, bowling, playing cards, traveling together, and watching their daughters and granddaughter play sports. In 2001 they had enough of Wisconsin winters and moved to the cottage at Land O’ Lakes for the summers and to Sun City West, Arizona for the winters to continue golfing, bowling, biking, playing cards and meeting wonderful new friends.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Racine, WI serving many years as a trustee. He is currently a member of Crown of Life Lutheran Church in Sun City West, AZ, where he also served as a trustee. Dick was employed in Racine by Bagley Construction and W.H. Miller Company, Inc. as a carpenter until he left in the 80s to become his own boss as a general contractor. Some might have said he retired in 2001; but he was still completing remodeling projects for friends, neighbors, and family until the day he died. Besides always planning his next creative project, he was an avid reader of all things Egypt, aircraft, and WWII, a lover of hazelnut lattes, an avid golfer and fisherman, and he never met a card game he didn’t like (well, except Keno).

Along with this wife of 53 years Yvonne, he is survived by his golfing partners daughter and son-in-law Barb and Jerry Daanen of Racine, his fishing partner daughter Effie Stone of Muscat, Oman, his now Bucky Badger granddaughter McKenzie (Mac) Daanen, sister-in-law Patricia Stone of Racine, sister and brother-in-law Carol and Bill Beresford of Franksville, nephew Randy Beres of Fort Myers, Florida; and too many golf buddies, card buddies, fishing buddies, good friends, relatives, and neighbors to name.

Dick was met in heaven by his parents, Emma and Gilbert Stone, brother Bob Stone, in-laws Emma and Louis Willers, brother-in-law Dwayne Willers, and good neighbor Art Keller. To the rest of us he says, “I’ll see you when I see you”.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2065 Geneva Street, in Racine on Saturday, September 16th with visitation at 10 am followed by a memorial service at 11 am. Memorial services will also be held at Hope Lutheran Church, Land O Lakes, WI and in Sun City West, AZ. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church or Racine Lutheran High School.
