UNION GROOVE—Harold Smart, 83, of Union Grove, passed away Friday, December 1, 2017 at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in New Lisbon, WI on June 27, 1934, he was the son of Orville and Beulah (Teachout) Smart. His early life was spent in New Lisbon, Lake Mills and then Union Grove where he graduated from Union Grove High School as Valedictorian of the class of 1952.
On September 17, 1955 he was united in marriage to Jane Carol Doyle, at Paris Corners Catholic Church. Following marriage they made their home in Union Grove where they raised their 4 daughters.
Harold had always been a very active person. In his high school years he played football, basketball and baseball, earning 9 varsity letters. He played on the 1948 Southeastern WI Conference championship football team and the 1952 Southeastern WI Conference baseball team. Also during high school he earned his Eagle Scout Badge and was selected Prom King and served as Class Vice President. He furthered his education by attending the University of WI, Racine where he studied electrical engineering. In 1956 Harold joined the staff of Union Grove Lumber and Fuel Company where he served as President and Chairman of the Board, retiring after 44 years. He served several years on the Wisconsin Retail Lumber Dealers Association Board of Directors and also as President of Builders World, Inc. He served 9 terms as a Trustee for the Village of Union Grove and 27 years as a board member for the Graham Public Library, where he also co-chaired the library expansion program. Harold served as a member and treasurer on the Board of Directors of Gateway Technical College of Racine, Kenosha and Walworth Counties for 4 years. He was a charter member and past president of the Union Grove Jaycees, past president of the Union Grove Lions Club, with 41 years of perfect attendance. Harold was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Award, the highest award presented by Lions Club International. He was the past president and lifetime member of the Greater Union Grove Area Chamber of Commerce and in 1993 he was presented the Chamber’s Community Service Award. He and Jane are members of St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church where he served on numerous committees and boards.
Harold is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jane; daughters, Sandra (Doug) Nelson, Linda (Gene) Bower and Andrea (Frank) Lamping; grandchildren, Christopher (Megan) Bower, Scott Nelson, Kevin (Dana) Bower, Peter (Christina Hartjes) Nelson, Adam (Paige) Bower and Alex Weiss. He is also survived by 12 great grandchildren, his brother, Tom (Carol) Smart, along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Laura and a brother, Ronald.
Family suggests that memorials be made to St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church or Union Grove Lions Club.
