Fr. Paul Daniels, 86, completed his final journey home on Monday, October 9, 2017, surrounded by family and friends. He died as he lived, peacefully.
Fr. Paul was born on March 5, 1931 in Brighton, WI to Max and Elizabeth (nee Schuerman) Daniels. He spent his early life in Brighton working on the family farm, attended St. Francis Grade School and St. Mary High School. He began his priestly formation in 1949 at Saint Francis de Sales Minor Seminary and completed his studies at Saint Francis de Sales Major Seminary. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 25, 1957, by Archbishop William E. Cousins at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Milwaukee.
His first priestly ministry was at St. Matthias, Milwaukee in 1957. In 1964 he also served at Holy Redeemer in Milwaukee, Holy Name in Racine in 1965, St. Joseph’s in Waukesha in 1969. In the summer of 1970 he was assigned to St. John’s in South Milwaukee. In 1976 he was appointed Pastor at St. Patrick’s in Racine, and in 1985 he was selected as Pastor of Good Shepherd parish in Menomonee Falls where he served until his retirement in June of 1999.
In 1963 Fr. Paul was appointed as the Federation chaplain for the Young Christian Workers (YCW). He was appointed to the Ecumenical and Interfaith Commission of the Archdiocese which he served for 6 years. He was a board member of the Center for Community Concerns in Racine and was awarded a Vatican II award for Service in the Priesthood in 2006. In his free time he enjoyed traveling, golf, sheepshead and having a cocktail with family and friends.
Fr. Paul is survived by his brother, Carl (Shirley) Daniels and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He is also survived by many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Bernice (Hershey) Vos and Lou (Nick) Hancock along with niece and nephews, Karen Vos, Doug Daniels, Stan Vos and Mark Hancock.
A concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial for Fr. Paul will be celebrated on Monday, October 16, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church in Brighton, 1704 240th Avenue, Brighton, WI 53139. Priest friends and former colleagues are invited to concelebrate; please bring an alb and a white stole. Visitation will take place at church on Monday, October 16th from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Burial will be private at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to go to Sisters of St. Dominic—Siena Center, St. Ben’s Parish—Capuchin Community Services, Foundation for Religious Retirement, or St. Francis Xavier Parish.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at Timber Oaks and Allay Hospice, and all his previous parishioners who have been faithful visitors to Paul.
