Mr. and Mrs. Roger Hayek of 5740 Cambridge Lane celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Feb. 3 during a family dinner in their honor at The Colony House in Trevor.
Hayek and the former Jana Clausen were married on Feb. 1, 1958, in Atonement Lutheran Church.
The couple met at The Racine Extension in 1956 and went out for pizza on their first date.
Hayek, 82, served in the U.S. Army from 1953-56 and was honorably discharged.
He retired from Ruud Lighting in 1997. In earlier years, Hayek was employed by the Racine Unified School District as a teacher and as a construction tool salesman at Racine Federated Inc.
Hayek was an alderman, and a member of the Racine City Council and his Church Council. He enjoyed playing racquetball.
Mrs. Hayek, 79, was a secretary at Von Schrader Co. and a receptionist at Bellwether Communications advertising agency, retiring in 2000.
The Racine natives are members of Atonement Lutheran Church and enjoy reading, playing tennis and swimming.
The couple said their happiest moments together was when their children and first grandchild were born.
The Hayeks have three children: Scott (Cheryl) of Mount Pleasant; Debra (Jeff) Minton of Somers; and Kristi (Pete White) Hayek of Minneapolis, Minn. They have four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Their advice to young people getting married today: “Never go to bed angry.”
