WIND POINT — The community will have a chance on Sunday to pause and remember Imogene “Gene” Powers Johnson, during a celebration event hosted by her children. Mrs. Johnson died on Saturday at the age of 87.
The event, which is open to the public, is meant to celebrate the life and accomplishments of the Prairie School founder and board chair.
The memorial is set for 3 p.m. on Sunday at The Prairie School’s Johnson Athletic Center, 4050 Lighthouse Drive.
Doors will open at 2 p.m. A reception will immediately follow the memorial service.
Mrs. Johnson was the wife of the late SC Johnson Chairman Sam Johnson and one of the Racine community’s major benefactors. Supporting education was one of her passions.
In addition to serving as chairman and director of The Prairie School, Mrs. Johnson was instrumental in the development of the River Bend Nature Center in Caledonia and, together with Sam, Gene provided support for the development and launch of the 21st Century Preparatory School, Racine’s first independent charter school.
Parking for Sunday’s celebration will be available at The Prairie School. Parking with complimentary shuttle service will also be available at: The Council House, 222 Three Mile Road, Wind Point; 4041 N. Main St., Wind Point; and at the Shorecrest Shopping Center at 3900 Erie St.
“Generations of Prairie students have benefited from Mrs. Johnson’s kind heart and giving spirit,” an invitation to the event reads. “We are honored to be a part of her pioneering leadership in education, her belief in young people and her dreams for this institution.”
