STURTEVANT — Cree was awarded $30 million in a federal grant, according to an announcement from the U.S. Department of Energy Thursday.
The DOE stated that the grant will go toward expanding the company’s manufacturing footprint here and in Durham, N.C.
Cree designs and manufactures light-emitting diode, or LED, lighting. The company includes what was formerly Ruud Lighting before Cree’s acquisition in 2011, with a large manufacturing operation at 9201 Washington Ave.
The money will go toward new machinery that will allow Cree to produce 304 million LED lighting systems, according to the announcement.
“With this project, Cree is taking the next step toward its goal of making traditional lighting products obsolete through the use of advanced LED technology with significant estimated annual energy savings,” the project description states.
A spokeswoman for Cree said Thursday the company “will not expand further” on the details of the grant at this time.
